The Lowdown on Meta Tags
There is no doubt that the world of SEO is extensive and that is why we like to provide our clients with the basics in order to ensure that they understand the general purpose of a campaign. With this said, it is not uncommon for business owners to want to know the ins and outs of SEO and everything it entails. One minor yet important feature is the Meta tag, and in this blog, we’ve decided to go over everything you may want to know about how they work…
What Are They?
In layman’s terms, meta tags are small snippets of text that describe the content of a page to the search engine in order to help it differentiate between each one. It is important to note that they do not appear on the page itself but can be found hidden within its code. In fact, they are only found in HTML at the head of the page which means that those who are actively searching for them tend to find them easily.
Meta Tags and SEO
Since meta tags inform a search engine about the information that can be found on a website, they are considered rather important in an SEO campaign. In fact, it is even possible to optimise them so that they are able to highlight the most important parts of the content and help the website stand out amongst the crowd in the SERPs. After all, relevance and quality play a big role in search engine trust and this can be successfully reinforced with carefully selected meta tags.
There are four different types of meta tags that can be utilised within the code of a page and these include: Meta keywords attribute, the keywords that are deemed relevant to the page; title tags, the text that the user will see at the very top of the page; Meta description attribute, a tag that includes a small description of the page; and Meta robots attribute, a tag that tells the search engine bots how to utilise the page. Whilst some are less important than others, it is important to consider each one carefully during an SEO campaign.
Here at SEO Enterprise, we believe that our industry is one of interpretation. With this said, there are some aspects that hold a great deal of importance and this includes meta tags. After all, an entire campaign would be futile if the search engine wasn’t able to differentiate between the content on different pages.
