As the most popular search engine on the web, it is safe to say that Google has managed to set the bar pretty high when it comes to ethical online marketing. Introduced in 2017, the Fred ‘algorithm’ isn’t actually an algorithm in the traditional sense. In fact, it is an umbrella term for algorithm updates that relate to site quality that Google does not formally identify. The Fred algorithm(s) have the potential to affect a variety of websites and were given the ironic name in order to allow SEO professionals to identify them with ease.


The Hummingbird algorithm was introduced in 2013 and has had an impact on billions of search queries ever since. After all, many of the results that users were provided with were too exact and often lack depth or resources as searcher intent was something that Google was yet to perfect. After the implementation of the Hummingbird algorithm, users were provided with much more relevant search results as the algorithm placed more emphasis on content and meaning rather than just the words themselves.


Local businesses and search results were positively impacted by the Pigeon algorithm in 2014. After all, it was implemented in order to reward local campaigns that had a strong organic presence with more visibility in the SERPs. Google did this by improving its ranking signals for Google Search and Google Maps and this allowed users to find local and relevant results based on their location rather than solely on the ranking of a site.
