SEO Myths

A lot of people including serious business owners don’t understand SEO. The majority of the time they haven’t even heard of SEO. But just because you haven’t heard of something, or you don’t understand it, doesn’t mean it isn’t valid or authentic. We know it works, we do it for a living – and we’re doing quite well if we do say so ourselves! – and so we can’t help but do a little bored eye roll when we hear that SEO is merely witchcraft or gobbledegook. Here are some of the most common myths regarding SEO that we’ve heard over the years…

  1. “SEO doesn’t even work.”

Oh does it not, no? So how do you look up a service online then and choose one to check out? You go straight to page 21 and pick some obscure one off there, do you? No, you check the first couple of pages. Why? “Because they’re all the good ones.” Yeah, they are. Thanks to fantastic customer service, honest business, good reputation… and SEO.

  1. “Yeah but you only need to do it all once, then it’s done. It’s not an ongoing thing.”

Oh is it not, no? You actually need to keep on top of your SEO, because as time passes the amount of traffic to your site will fall. SEO can increase traffic flow but it’s a constant process that needs to be maintained throughout your online marketing campaign.

  1. “It’s just putting keywords all over your site though, that’s not difficult.”

Oh is it, yeah? Yeah no. That’s called overstuffing and you can be penalised by Google for that. Google also changes its algorithms constantly and that is why you need to be on your A-game when it comes to SEO. Obviously keywords are part of it, but it’s certainly not the be all and end all.

  1. “It’s expensive for what it is, I could just do it myself.”

Oh you could, could you? If you get offered a cheap deal chances are pretty high that I’s not a reputable or legitimate company. They’ll probably cut corners too. A legit SEO company will spend many hours working the back end of your site, putting in code, making sure everything links up and works properly and goes where it’s meant to when site visitors click it… There are ethics to adhere to and rules, policies, procedures. And if you have a cheap SEO deal, it’s pretty much a given that you’ll spend a fortune undoing the damage they do. So, no. You can’t just do it yourself.

  1. “So if it’s so successful and it really works and it’s necessary then surely it should be instant?”

Oh it should, should it? It takes time to build credible links and exchanges between businesses, and it also takes time to research a demographic. You can garner traffic through the use of social media but it can often be a flash in the pan, such as Christmas sales for example. Success is not guaranteed and patience is definitely required.
