On 25th May 2018, GDPR will be implemented across the UK and the rest of the EU, with companies of all sizes becoming much more transparent in the way they store and handle personal data. The new regulations make businesses much more accountable for their use and possession of personal information – such as bank details, names, etc- for both customers and their own employees.
The biggest impact of GDPR will probably be seen in the way businesses now have to communicate with customers. Take email marketing, for example- businesses will only be able to contact people that have opted in to receive email communications, while it also needs to be made clear as to what people are actually opting in for.
This is EU legislation, so there’s no way to work around this and look for some kind of loophole; otherwise you’ll be in breach of GDPR and find yourself on the receiving end of a pretty hefty find. As users, these changes are all incredibly exciting; as marketers, this offers a fresh new challenge. But you probably already knew that.
What you might not have realised is just how much GDPR could impact the way in which your business operates internally. This is something that could cause act as a potential banana skin for small businesses in particular, especially if they haven’t taken the time to read up on how GDPR changes the way they deal with employees.
We recently went to a fantastic seminar put on by Peninsula, and we came away feeling as though many businesses might be overwhelmed by some of the changes. We were lucky enough to get some expert advice over what needs to be done between now and May, and the last thing we want is for any small business owners to lose sleep over what GDPR entails.
As mentioned above, it’s all about transparency and accountability, with businesses now having to be much clearer on how they are sharing and storing the personal data of their employees. You need to show that you’ve done everything reasonably possible to keep such information safe, and have the ability to show employees exactly what data you have for them.
The problem is that, if you are in breach of GDPR, this probably won’t become apparent until you have an issue with a member of staff. It would be in this kind of situation when they ask you to prove that your data was stored securely and, if you can’t, then you’ll be in breach of GDPR.
It’s all common sense really, but it’s also something you have to take seriously. It could just be a case of having a secure lock box to store paperwork in or taking the time to ensure out-of-date information has been erased. You need to know exactly who has access to this data and doing everything possible to ensure it is secure.
